Diecast Ford GT & Ford GT40

Two unique cars; The Ford GT built in the 1960's, the Ford GT, built many years later in the 2000's.  For a car company like Ford, that normally builds cars that are affordable by the middle classes, these two cars certainly are impressive for one of the Big 3 to have produced.

Ford GT40

The Ford GT40 was a sports car built by Ford from 1965-1968.  The earliest versions included a 4.2L V8 engine, but later production models came with a 4.7L 289 cubic inch V8 that was used in the Mustang.  After a successful racing career, the Ford GT40 also enjoyed a successful run as a road car.   Today the car is quite rare and replica's have been built that are so impressive that it's difficult to tell their authenticity.  An authentic GT will run somewhere in excess of $500,000.  A company that owns the GT40 trademark also sells what they call, Continuation Models.  These are authentic cars made to exact GT40 specs.

Ford GT

In 2003 Ford revived the GT40 body and produced a new and updated car called the Ford GT.  Over 4000 were produced and they were for sale for over $500,000 in some cases as demand was fierce in the beginning.  Although they look very much like the original, many updates make this a different car.  It includes a 5.4L Supercharged V8 and 6 speed manual transmission and the car has been clocked at 212mph.   This is a car that Ford had considered building for about a decade before actually moving forward with the project.  This time around, the cars had to be named Ford GT rather than GT-40 because that name had been sold years earlier.

Both the diecast Ford GT40 and a diecast Ford GT deserve a place in a Diecast car collection as both are true pieces of American automotive history.
