Diecast Mercedes
Tracing its roots back to 1886 when Karl Benz created the very first automobile and Gottlieb Daimler and Willhelm Maybach adding a gas engine to a carriage, Mercedes-Benz has had a long history of building quality automobiles. Currently the company is owned by Daimler AG of Germany, which was formerly DaimlerChrysler.![]() |
The Mercedes-Benz 770 was introduced in 1930 and were used by governments as state cars to transport dignitaries. This was the first car to be built after the new "Mercedes-Benz" name was formed. For it's time, it was a powerful car - 150hp and had a top speed of 100mph, which was incredibly impressive. 117 of these cars were built before an updated version was built in 1938. The new "Series II" had even more power - 230hp. In total 88 of these cars were built.
Mercedes has always been at the forefront of automotive technology, and this holds true with the first diesel production car - the Mercedes-Benz 260 D. This car was built from 1936-1941 and almost 2000 units were produced. The 260 D came with a diesel injection system and produced 45hp, which could propel the car to 95km/h.
Certainly a discussion about Mercedes-Benz would be incomplete without discussing the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Made famous with it's gull-wing doors, it was built from 1952-1963. At first it was built just as a race car, but a road version came onto the market in 1955 and was available in Coupe and Roadster. Not only was the styling much different than other cars on the road, but it also included the first fuel injection system.
Over the years, partnerships with AMG and McLaren have resulted in some very high performance versions, which include the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and the C 36 AMG, which was based on a C-Class Mercedes.
