Diecast Maybach
Founded in 1909 in Germany, many are unaware that this company even existed. When they introduced new cards in 2003, plenty of people thought this was a new company, not knowing it's rich history dated back 100 years. Maybach was founded by a man named Wilhelm Maybach in 1909 and they began production of cars starting in 1919. For about 20 years, Maybach created 13 different models of varying size and shape - in total 1800 Maybach's were built before they stopped all production for many years.![]() |
1997 was a new day for Maybach after over 50 years of being dormant. Mercedes-Benz had purchased Maybach and built a luxury car to show off at the Tokyo Motorshow. This new model was originally a Maybach badged, Mercedes-Benz that Mercedes had planned to market under their banner. After some consideration, Mercedes decided not to brand the car as a Mercedes, but as a separate entity, Maybach.
The result of this new company were 2 cars that would compete against the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley and would offer incredible luxury to those who could afford it. The Maybach 57 and 62 were introduced in 2002 based on a Mercedes S-class sedan. Both cars are almost identical, except for the wheelbase - the 57 is shorter, while the 62 is longer and would more likely be driven by a chaffeur.
In the 1990's, DaimlerChrysler, the company that owned Mercedes at the time had been trying to purchase a luxury brand, which included attempts to purchase Rolls-Royce and Bentley. While attempts failed, BMW ended up buying the Rolls-Royce, and Volkswagen purchased Bentley, DaimlerChysler decided to take a chance on the old Maybach name to build an ultra luxury car that would compete against the Rolls and Bentley.
By all accounts, Maybach was a success and was equipped with all the luxury that Rolls-Royce and Bentley buyers were looking for. From fully reclining seats, 4 zone climate control, DVD navigation system, and BOSE sound system, the Maybach name easily positioned itself among the ranks of the uber rich.
For 2009 Maybach has produced a Landaulet car, or in other words, a vehicle where thee roof can be opened at the rear. This unique vehicle allows the chaffeur to remain completely inside the vehicle, while the passengers in the rear are open to the sky.
Unfortunately all this luxury comes with a significant price - $340,000 U.S for the smaller version and $392,000 for the larger model.
As with most cars discussed on this website, the price is likley a little to high for many of us to actually purchase, but a diecast Maybach might be in your future.
